Quilled OM

The ancient syllable OM or AUM is the shortest of the Mantras and in the Indian tradition it is a word suggestive of God.Repetition of OM enables one to maintain mental and emotional calmness , overcome obstacles and enable understanding.Saying "OM" is actually a form of meditation.

I made this card for a dear friend. I wanted to make a simple OM symbol and fill it Szalonaisa style, you can see one of her work here where she has used such tiny elements to fill up the animal figures. I rolled the strips around a old refill to make small circles. I have lost count of the hours it took me to finish this one. I almost at one point believed it would never end.But it looks so beautiful as if made with tiny beads. Needless to say it looks better than it does in the pictures.

Thanks for stopping by, Have a creative day.

Here's another OM I  made on request. Glad it also turned out well.

Crimped flower

I finished decorating another arathi thattu. Like my previous one this is also a  wooden frame covered with handmade paper. The plate is decorated with quilling ,some bling and the frame is decorated with a  recyled ribbon flower and a string of beads .

The square is quite large with both the length and breadth more than A4 size , the challenge for me was to find ways to cover the area quickly. I made a big crimped flower for the center and swirls to cover the rest of the space. Alternate looping method is a quick way to make big quilled elements and so I choose this method . I did struggle a lot to stick the single strips on the uneven surface, had to use a lot of glue . The good thing is the glue doesn't show much. I made the center of the flower flat so as to make place for a small lamp.

White on white

Ever since I started quilling I spend a lot of time searching for quilling ideas and bookmarking them  . I found a page bookmarked long ago but quite forgotten here, I found this beautiful white on white quilled work. I was amazed all over again at how the coils can be shaped into so many ways to give life to strips of paper.
Every quiller has a different talent and strength and I feel a lot of respect for the ones who can come up with such wonderful ideas.I quilled this and learnt (and enjoyed) some more  quilling. I don't own a single book on quilling, and I am thankful to talented people around the world who share their work and help other people learn the craft .

Quilled miniature clown

Here is a quilled miniature clown for Akhil's friend for his birthday. Making this little guy really cheered me up.

I promised Akhil a miniature clown for his friend but put it off as long as I could .Although I am not very confident about quilling miniatures , when I finally had to start making this doll I really enjoyed the process. It turned out to be lot easier than the quilled hanuman which had lot of minute details.

It is still not perfect but I fell better about this doll than all my previous ones and it stands so well.Except for the wire to support the balloon(it is a balloon!) and a small bling on the bow the doll is completely made of paper.

Thanks for stopping by , have a fun filled day.

Quilled valentine

I started with the idea of using roses on my card and ended up making this whimsical Valentine's day card. These roses were made using this quilled roses tutorial .The only difference is instead loose coil in the center  , I added more petals. The difficult part in this card was in shaping the multistrips.

Quilling on Arathi thattu

Arathi thattu or decorated plates are used in Indian weddings to welcome the bridegroom and his family on the day of the wedding. It is an important part of south Indian culture. Plates are decorated and lamps are lit on them .
This is a square wooden plate covered with hand made paper .The inner rectangle is little more than A4 size. I used crimped swirls to quickly fill up the space . No amount of bling is enough when decorating these plates. The swirls and the quilled swans are all glittered ( it doesn't show in the picture).  Seeing so many valentines on other blogs I too was inspired to do a heart shape.I am decorating a few plates and this is the first of them.
