Wedding plates with quilling.

Today I am sharing some of the wedding plate decorations I  made using Quilling.  The request came from a friend for her daughter's wedding , she wanted one wedding knot and the names but pretty much left everything else to me. I tried some new techniques that I have not tried before. I particularly enjoyed working with crepe paper . The background handmade paper is my new purchase from my recent trip to Pondicherry, I visited the factory to buy these paper. They are thin and flexible with brilliant colours And delightful to work with. It does not show in these pictures but these gorgeous paper have beautiful streaks of Gold and silver running through the length of the sheet.

For the names of the bride and groom I used the same font as that in the wedding invitation . I printed them out on an A4 sheet got the impression on metallic paper and quilled over it. I used five shades of pink to get the graduating effect.

Thanks for stopping by , Have a great day.

More paper beads.

It is Golu time again, with Navarathri fast approaching . We ladies of our library have started work which will go on till the beginning of next month. I thought I would post some paper beads that I made some time ago and again take a break from blogging until after Navarathri. But then again if I happen to make anything nice with paper for the Golu  I will surely take time to post.

These beads are made out of metallic red colour paper rolled into a cone shape and then hand painted with acrylic gold  . The pendant is quilled with the same metallic paper. The tight coil at the center is also painted. This was made on request from a friend for her son's wedding as one of the many wedding day gifts for her daughter in law.

These paper beads are made from recycling a catalogue . I really enjoyed rolling these.

Quilled wedding knot

I received a request from a friend for an arathi thattu for her daughter's wedding.  I suggested flowers , but she wanted something different and new. I found this design on the internet on a  wedding card. I drew it out and quilled .I used beehive quilling as it seemed best as I had to incorporate the dots to show some design on the clothes. In some Indian weddings the saree of the bride is tied to the groom's garment symbolizing the union.

Crimped flower

I finished decorating another arathi thattu. Like my previous one this is also a  wooden frame covered with handmade paper. The plate is decorated with quilling ,some bling and the frame is decorated with a  recyled ribbon flower and a string of beads .

The square is quite large with both the length and breadth more than A4 size , the challenge for me was to find ways to cover the area quickly. I made a big crimped flower for the center and swirls to cover the rest of the space. Alternate looping method is a quick way to make big quilled elements and so I choose this method . I did struggle a lot to stick the single strips on the uneven surface, had to use a lot of glue . The good thing is the glue doesn't show much. I made the center of the flower flat so as to make place for a small lamp.

Thanks for stopping by, Happy international women's day.

Quilling on Arathi thattu

Arathi thattu or decorated plates are used in Indian weddings to welcome the bridegroom and his family on the day of the wedding. It is an important part of south Indian culture. Plates are decorated and lamps are lit on them .
This is a square wooden plate covered with hand made paper .The inner rectangle is little more than A4 size. I used crimped swirls to quickly fill up the space . No amount of bling is enough when decorating these plates. The swirls and the quilled swans are all glittered ( it doesn't show in the picture).  Seeing so many valentines on other blogs I too was inspired to do a heart shape.I am decorating a few plates and this is the first of them.
